Balance Problems

About 36 million older adults fall each year, and this results in 32,000 deaths on average. In a younger individual a fall can cause a serious injury, but in an older adult it can be deadly. Even in a strong, healthy aging adult all of the systems your body requires to react to and prevent a fall become slower and less responsive.

These systems are also so complex that it can be a challenge to figure out where to start to improve your balance. Fortunately, physical therapists are educated and experienced at evaluating and testing to determine where your body is lacking the most to allow a custom, specific exercise and treatment program to efficiently and safely improve your balance and reduce your risk of a major fall.

When added help is required, your therapist is also able to provide you with recommendations for assistive devices such as canes and walkers to enhance your safety when physical skills are not quite enough to keep you safe.
